    Assistant Professor Blake Williams throws a slab of clay during a demonstration for Studio Art 340 Ceramics I at Kresge Art Center. Monday was the beginning of the first summer session for students. The class will meet four days a week. Williams said students should allow for an extra eight hours of work outside of class in order to compensate for the shorter semester. Williams will instruct students on the basics of ceramic sculpture such as slab and coil building.     Eric Rising premedical sophomore and Natalie Lis preveterinary freshman rent an apartment at Brandywine Creek Apartments in northern East Lansing. Lis said that one of the reasons they chose Brandywine was because they accepted pets. Rising and Lis share their one bedroom apartment with a kitten a dog two rats a guinea pig and a python.     In about one month Andrea Amalfitano professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine will be continuing research on genetics to use one virus to attack another one. Amalfitano will utilize biohazard hoods to assist in containing the viruses that will eventually lead to designer genes that will help fight cancer and AIDS. I like what Im doing.     Jay Schneider an education graduate student and WDBM Impact 89 FM disc jockey on Monday afternoon hosts the high noon duel between two newly released albums. Schneider is a primetime DJ for the Accidental Blues show that airs Wednesday nights from 8 p.m. until midnight. He said listeners are very loyal to the Impact. There is one listener who has a string of tin cans and copper wire around his room just so that he can pick up the Impact. He said listeners are so loyal because the Impact is the only true alternative station in the area. We break the music first. Jeana-Dee Allen

The Committee is partnering with labor unions and other grassroots organizations to change the 5.15 an hour minimum wage to 7.15 an hour.
